The ACS assessment covering the investigation of a report of smells or fumes is now available.
CMDDA1 is an ACS assessment that tests the gas safety competence of an operative in the work of carrying out carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide room monitoring & combustion performance.

 

It is NOT a mandatory requirement but will aid a registered gas engineer responding to a report of a smell of fumes from a gas appliance or the activation of a CO alarm in domestic premises:

• Where a customer suspects fumes due to activation of a CO alarm
• Where a customer suspects fumes due to signs of spillage or smells being emitted from a gas appliance
• Where a customer contacts ‘The Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society’and they recommend that a Gas Safe Registered Installer with the appropriate competencies is required

 

This will also aid the Local Authorities and nominated subcontractors responding to calls from their tenants.

 

Pre-requisites:         

• CCN1/CCLP1 + CPA1 or;
• CCN1/CCLP1 as from 1st April 2012 or;
• A valid equivalent NVQ or QCF qualification plus appropriate domestic appliance(s)

 

Areas of work are:

• Domestic Natural Gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
• Covers the use of analysers to determine ambient levels of CO and presence of CO₂in dwellings, CO and CO₂ in combustion products from flueless appliances (Type A), open flue appliances (Type B), and room sealed appliances (Type C).

 

During the course the candidates will be assessed on the following:

• Carrying out ambient CO, CO₂ testing and combustion performance analysis using electronic portable gas analysers on domestic gas appliances in dwellings following:
  • Indication of fumes
  • Smells
  • Spillage or leakage of combustion products
  • CO detector activation
• Interpretation of results and responses from householder or other party.

 

Course duration of one day should be sufficient to complete this assessment.  The subjects are wide ranging, so are mainly covered in the classroom. This is by lecturer input and written exercises. There are practical tasks also, in certain areas of work.  The ACS assessments vary with the subject, but all include multiple-choice theory paper/s and practical tasks.

Manual Handling – 1 day

Under health and safety legislation, there is a duty to identify where this shifting could lead to a significant risk of injury and then to take common sense measures to reduce the risk.  The relevant legislation is the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended).

The manual handling course is aimed at all levels of employees who may undertake manual handling operations.  Manual handling accidents account for more than a third of all accidents reported each year to the enforcing authorities. It is estimated that in excess of 500,000 people in Great Britain suffer from a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) mainly affecting the upper limbs or neck that was caused, or made worse, by their current or past work. Avoidance of the shifting is always the best option, typically followed by the use of machinery. However, for most businesses, physical handling by people will always be required for some tasks – as will manual handling training, to ensure that they do it as safely as possible.  Our basic course covers the following topics:

The Scheme will assess an Individual’s competence to carry out work safely within the various environmental and related technology sectors designated in schedule 2A of the Building Regulations. The Scheme is not intended to assess an Individual’s competence in other areas of work, which are often undertaken within the complete range of work activity. Employers, employees and the self-employed should recognise the responsibilities and duties they have under all legislation that encompasses their range of work.

The Scheme shall be available to Individuals both with and without preparatory training.  Candidates applying for the first time under this scheme will undertake an initial assessment; however, for those candidates who are renewing their assessments, under this scheme may be eligible to take a reassessment.  The Schemes comprise of a number of safety Assessments, which can be tailored to reflect an Individual’s area of work. Each Assessment is subdivided into elements that reflect the competence that an Individual is required to demonstrate in accordance with Assessment criteria.  The Assessment(s) require an Individual to complete practical and/or written assessments dependent the assessment/scheme selected. Where necessary, Individuals may be asked oral questions posed by an Assessor.

With effect from the 1 July 1999 the Government issued the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, and revoked the Water Supplier’s Byelaws for England and Wales.  For many years Water Supply Byelaws had been used to protect the public water supply on both domestic and commercial plumbing installations from waste, misuse, undue consumption and contamination of water. As Statutory Instruments, the Regulations replaced local byelaws with national legislation, increasing the profile of the subject and making the Secretary of State for the Environment accountable to Parliament for them.
